Mow Em Down & Mow Money

Two Unique Table Games for the Family to Enjoy!

Game Design Contests

I have become a semi-regular contributor to the monthly "Game Design Showdown" at the Board Game Design Forum.  The challenge of the Showdown is to create and describe a game that fits within a certain set of theme and/or mechanic specifications.  Contestants have a week to design their entries, and they have an 800 word limit to describe the rules.  They contributors then have a week to read the other entries and cast votes for each others' entries.  I still have yet to win a Showdown, but my games have received some positive criticism.  Check out my recent entries.

Protospiel Contest

Early in the fall of 2010, I learned about the Protospiel Card Game Design Contest. The gist of the contest is to design a game that uses exactly 110 cards.  There are several rounds to the contest and the final winner will be announced in the summer of 2011.  The winning game will receive a small publication.

The contest interested me, and I decided to enter "Mow Money," a card game version of Mow 'Em Down that I have been working on since June. The first round began in October.  I'll post up-to-date announcements about the game's status in the News Section.

Mow Money

Summer is here and the grass is growing. You and up to three others are landscaping companies, competing to cut and trim the lawns of some wealthy property owners who are willing to hire the lowest bidder and pass along a kind word. This is a game more about earning a good reputation than earning a lot of money, but in the end, having a few extra bucks won't hurt!

Lowball Battle

The house renovation business is booming, and construction companies are eager to win remodeling contracts and become the most respectable company in town. Company owners try to bid lower than others to win contracts, but if they can't fulfill their end of the deal, they won't get fully paid and will lose the respect of the townspeople.

Race for the Moon

Blast back to an alternate version of the 1950's and 60's. National pride is on the line as several countries (USA, USSR, West Germany, and China) are in a race to put a man on the moon. Two to four players compete using their wits and resources to claim the prize.

Torrent Pirates

You and the other players have started a new network of sharing pirated files. But an argument has arisen about what type of files this network will host. Some in the group believe the network should be restricted to just one file type, while others in the group believe the more file types the better. You must decide how you will proceed, and work to become the most influential server on the network.

NEW! Version 2.2.1 (zip file) - In this version the phases are now played one at a time in turn order.  This speeds up the gameplay and makes it more interactive with less player-downtime.  Also updated are the Enhancement Cards, now featuring both In-Game effects as well as End-of-Game bonuses. Users will need to supply their own Start-Player Token and Money Tokens (poker or bingo chips would work well).
